This education then provided the fertile grounds for two significant decisions which shaped my online marketing. I have to tell you, these were the best financial decisions I have ever made and they resulted in freedom.

• Freedom to work only when I want to.

• Freedom to work with the people I choose to work with.

• Freedom to take long dog walks with my buddy Otis.

• Freedom to take a day off at a moment’s notice.

• Freedom to do what I want to do and when I want to do it.

So, what are the two decisions which I made years ago?

1) I would learn to drive F.REE traffic from Google and other search engines.

One thing became quite apparent very quickly — traffic is paramount!

Those who had traffic made money and those who did not, starved. It is as simple as just that. I thought to myself, “learn to get traffic or keep your day job, Johnson.”

So, I began to look at my options for traffic.

a) PPC – This was an easy decision.

I had no money. I did not want to mess around with conversions, click costs, margins and percentages … all the stuff which PPC gurus spend hours thinking about.

Enter SEO – and My Google Period

Learning some basic SEO skills really made sense. I could get started on a shoestring budget, would not have to worry too much about stats as I would not be paying for clicks …

Any site I launched would usually break even after one or two sales and the rest would be gravy. So, I studied Google and basic SEO and the rest is history. As I am writing this email, I have an ever growing network of money making sites.
They are like my little sales army and they never need sleep. They usually go profitable with one sale a month or a few

AdSense clicks – it is a stupidly simple business model.
One in which I was smart enough to see the power years ago.

2) My Second Decision Was Based on Affiliate Marketing.

But honestly, there was also a third decision and that was about WordPress which truly shaped me as a marketer. I first learned about WordPress in a membership site called “Revenue Insider” while most members bitched and complained about the site.

Too bad … it was really good and I learned a ton.

Probably the best thing I got out of Rev Insider was WordPress. It is easy and allows me to create sites that are far more powerful (and search engine friendly) than the little hack-job sites I was launching with FrontPage.

Today, I use WordPress on 99.9% of my websites but on the remaining .1% I still use the archaic FrontPage. Please don’t tell my marketing buddies.

Most people think of WordPress as the publishing platform on which blogs are created. Thus, many people ask me about my “blogs.”

Today wordpress is at a point where the possibilities are just fantastic for internet marketers with powerful plugins and themes and that is what I want to share with you today.

Deep Inside My Wordpress Traffic Lab Testing Continues …

Over the last few months I have been cramming for sure, creating my next course (my best work todate), leading webinars for Alex Goad and testing some very intresting new wordpress traffic tactics. Let me share with you two of my latest case studies.

Several years ago I released Revenue Domains Exposed in which I shared methods I have been using for some time to easily drive hordes of money making traffic via expired domains. This past February I picked up a few expired gems on the cheap about $40 bucks a pop or so … no major investment. My intent was to test out several new wordpress plugins (easy content with the push a button) and new wordpress themes that allow for amazing customization. Many of these new style wordpress themes give users the power to control aspects such as font, font size, colors, layouts, easy integration of adsense and Google Analytics and more.

After launching two test study cases I am floored with the results to date.

I launched the first site about a month ago and Google was slow to come by and update the site, however about 10 days after launching I noticed Google was indeed indexing the new content, even better was the site was driving traffic. Normally this would not impress me, this is what I do for a living … create sites and drive content that makes me money online.

However, I have not written one word of content, I spent about two hours setting up the site and walked away

Several weeks later I had noticed that Google had indexed 988 pages and that the traffic was continuing to grow and the site was making money via contextual ads. Easy money for the taking for sure.

Yesterday I figured I would launch the second case study site, by 11am my time the site was live with about 10 posts. By the evening Google had already indexed about 100 pages / posts / tag achieves /ect ….And … the site had already made me some cash. Funny, many people do not seam to get the power of Revenue Domains Exposed. That is fine, I will continue to use the method to cash in and will just have less competition!

My Plan Of Attack – Mass Production

As I move forward with this easy money making system I plan on using these two new premium wordpress themes. As mentioned they give me the chance to easily create fantastic looking sites that I control, I will test and tweak contextual ad integration on one or two sites and find the formula that gives me the best CTR and earnings. Then I will use those same setting across all the sites I launch, this will keep me busy launching more sites, not playing and tweaking themes.

I always teach people they should always focus on traffic, especially when someone is just starting out. After all spending days working with themes, images, ad colors and placement means NOTHING with no traffic. That however does not mean sites should not look good, using these wordpress themes that allow for so much customization but where created by designers means sharp looking sites with a few clicks. Google LSI has been a quite the buzz word for those that travel the webmaster forums and blogs. So what exactly is lsi and what does it mean to you and your website(s).

Bottom line: Google understands the correlation between some words.

More on LSI and what it means to you and your site rankings, talk first started about how Google would implement LSI into the algorithm back in about 2005 / 2006. While the term itself sounds highly technical and out of reach for the average webmaster the truth of the matter is this could not be furthest from the truth.

But before we go in-depth with Algo tweak lets take a second to think about why Google might have wanted to add this element to how Google indexes and further ranks pages. Back in 2004 and 2005 (stone ages in Internet world) ranking highly for given search terms was much a simpler and straight forward process.

Create a document that simply focus on one given keyword phrase, repeat the phrase over and over again (many call this keyword stuffing). That is part one, next simply point some inbound links to the given page with a variation of anchor text containing the main keyword phrase and *presto* a top ten ranking was achieved.

Case in point, back in 2003 or 2004 I spent about 15 hours creating a website that targeted a holiday niche around one keyword phrase. I linked out to one affiliate program and also included adsense. The site had about 40 pages or so targeting what I call “low hanging fruit” keyword phrases.

For a 5 week period the site rules Google and I made $25,000 

So Google thus began introducing LSI which allows a machine or computer program (ala Google) to ascertain how words related to one another and general themes between words. Gone are the days when Google would simply look for an occurrence of a singular keyword phrase.

Google now has the ability to understand that the following words (from my video example above) all relate to one another in some way shape or forum.

• Halloween
• Holiday
• Ghost
• Movie
• Michael Myers
• Costume
• Horror

A great way to use the power of LSI is to insure your sites go wide by adding categories to your site focusing on LSI keyword phrases. Another method I use is to simply “link out” to other on topic sites using LSI keyword phrases. Is the Google duplicate content filter hurting your search engine rankings? The video below covers several issues including the dup content penalty as well as how wordpress handles your content.

Most people understand that using free content from article sites or even worse paid membership sites can often times hurt your search engine rankings online.

After all just what do the major search engines have to gain by indexing and ranking your content when they have already listed the same content?

However Google’s duplicate content filter also looks for duplicate content across one domain name. You might wonder how does the same content get listed on various sections of a website? Well, let’s take wordpress for example.

• If you were to  post an article to more than one wordpress category you just created duplicate content.
• If your categories render your entire post rather than the excerpt … yep, more duplicate content.
• The wordpress archives again post that same article yet another section of your site.
• How about the rss feed? Are you posting full posts or excerpts?

As you can see it is very important to make sure you set up your site in a way in which your NOT creating duplicate content across your site. Further more make sure the wordpress theme your using has address all of the above issues.
